Crypto currency is very volatile and highly debated market that has rewarded many early adopters. The backbone of all cryptocurrencies (Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoins etc) is the blockchain – a digital ledger that registers all the concerned currency transaction. This is necessary due to the absence of a central transaction management framework (traditional bank). In its simplest form, mining is essentially the online verification of transaction processes. It is a well known fact that crypto mining has high energy demands. Hence, on small-scales, it does not even help to break even. Brining renewables into the mix can greatly offset the operational expenses. Thus, solar cryptocurrency mining farms might be able to provide better financial viability. This is exactly what DC Two plans to achieve through their facility in Western Australia.
Solar Cryptocurrency Mining
The DC Two data center is built in Collie (a popular coal mining center). The town is about 200 kms to the south of Perth. The approval for the data center was given on April 2018 by the Development Assessment Panel (WA). The site is near to the Collie sub-station and occupies fifty seven hectares. The power requirements of the facility will be met through a combination of solar and coal. The nearby 20 MW Hadouken plant provides the necessary solar energy. On commission, this will be one of the first data centers in the country to run primarily from renewable energy – called “behind the grid” data center. As per the statements by DC Two, annually, the farm should be able to mine about 650 bitcoins with a power consumption of 4MW
The datacenter is scheduled to launch in early 2019. At a construction cost of about AU $16 million, the project has approval from the WA Joint Development Assessment Panels. The Hadouken solar farm will have about 69,000 solar panels (about 0.9 m above the finished ground level). The mounting will be on fixed frames in an area of 18 hectares with switchgears between inverters and grid connection toward the north east. Furthermore, the plant design is in such a way to accommodate a future battery storage upgrade. Finally, such sustainable crypto mining enjoys positive outlook from ecologists and environmentalists as opposed to their fossil-fuel counterparts.
