Go Solar Group has been awarded an Australian Research Council (ARC) Linkage Grant, with a total project funding of $274,000. The ARC Linkage Projects scheme supports collaborative research and development projects between higher education institutions and other organisations, including within industry, to enable the application of advanced knowledge to problems. This project aims to remove the need for energy storage in micro-grids via adoption of synthetic storage.
Australian Research Council Project – GoSolar & University of Tasmania
Microgrids encounter high renewable energy penetrations early, given their small size. Typically, micro-grid variability is managed with technologies such as energy storage. Synthetic storage involves replacing fixed speed diesel assets with variable speed diesel technology. This approach offers a much more cost-effective way to improve renewable penetration and reduce diesel fuel consumption in micro-grids by removing the need for expensive energy storage. The expected project outcomes include reductions in cost and complexity for high renewable energy penetration micro-grids, reduced emissions and improved micro-grid reliability. Professor Michael Negnevitsky, A/Professor Xiaolin Wang and Professor Chem Nayar will contribute to the R&D in solving remote microgrid power quality and control.
Professor Chem Nayar representing GoSolar said “the project was a significant one that will assist in developing customised solutions and major improvements in remote microgrid applications all over the world. ARC also funding presents an exciting opportunity for collaborative research on remote area power generation using renewables”.
